Week 4 Blog

The actors I plan on discussing this week are Will Smith, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo DiCaprio. I would classify these three gentleman as follows:
Will Smith: Character
Brad Pitt: Character
Leonardo DiCaprio: Personality

Starting with Will Smith the movie “The pursuit of happiness” Is based on a true story about a man known as Christopher Gardner. Christopher Gardner has invested basically everything in a device known as a “Bone Density scanner” (Bone Density scanner: is a scanner used to measure bone density with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry). He feels like he has made these devices. However, they do not sell or compare to what’s to the current technology at a much higher price. As he tries to figure out how to sell them, he ends up losing his wife, his house, his bank account, and credit cards and forced to live out in the streets with his son, he ends up as desperate as could be to find a steady job; and ends up taking on a job as a stockbroker, but before he can receive pay, he needs to go through 6 months of training, and to sell his devices, though life.

The character of Brad Pitt in the movie “Troy” which is one of my favorite movies to watch. “It is the year 1250 B.C. during the late Bronze age. Two emerging nations begin to clash after Paris, the Trojan prince, convinces Helen, Queen of Sparta, to leave her husband, Menelaus, and sail with him back to Troy. After Menelaus finds out that his wife was taken by the Trojans, he asks his brother Agamemnon to help him get her back. Agamemnon sees this as an opportunity for power. So they set off with 1,000 ships holding 50,000 Greeks to Troy. With the help of Achilles, the Greeks are able to fight the never before defeated Trojans. But they come to a stop by Hector, Prince of Troy. The whole movie shows their battle struggles and the foreshadowing of fate in this remake by Wolfgang Petersen of Homer’s “The Iliad.”” (imdb)

Last but not least, Leonardo DiCaprio. I will like to discuss his personality in the movie blood diamonds. Danny Archer is without question hard and cynical. He cares not really for anything but himself and his needs of the moment with a bit of greed. But In the end of his life he comes to the realization and understand that he’s lacked for years and there is more than endless African Nihilism.

TED 2:

·         Identify the type of lighting used in the film (traditional three-point, high-key, or low-key) and assess the impact of the lighting used to establish the theme.

o   In the film Ted 2 there were many uses of lighting for the plethora of most of the dynamic scenes in the film.  I think we all know the importance of lighting in any movie and in the subject of the film (Ted) it is added in film late.  “Due to this the lighting on the animation has to match the lighting from the original shot in order to make it more realistic as though Ted were there the whole time. Elements of High-Key Lighting can be seen in many of different scenes from Ted 2.  As it is set in “real-time” Boston, we can see high-key being used to offset the natural light that is produced when recording outside during times of low-light.” (WordPress)

o   The importance of the high-key lighting in most films it’s used in dark spaces to make the actors visible and creates a natural lighting for the moment.

·         Compare how the scene would play if different choices had been made.

o   For an example if a different lighting besides the high-key lighting was chosen in a scene where the actors were to be in a room then it wouldn’t have made the actors visible and wouldn’t have created that natural feeling to it.

• Describe each of the three basic categories of sound (dialogue, sound effects, and music).
Dialogue In this sound it includes the observable behavioral and physiological component of emotion of sounds spoken, the underlying and often distinct theme in a piece of writing or conversation, the connotation and denotation of words, the literal meaning and implied meaning of speeches, and rhetorical devices like symbolism and verbal irony.
Sound effects are something that we turn not to really think much of, but the quality of it is what makes or break the moment on the screen. Sound effects are the added sounds that provides or completes the action of the film, equally, some sound effects are known to carry symbolic meaning as-well.
Music create a convincing pervading tone or a moody setting if I may put it, it helps tell your story in the way you want and still be able to strike a very emotional cord, in which all put together can wow your audience and hopefully make them keep asking for more.
• Explain how the different categories of sound are being used in your chosen film.
The dialogue in I AM LEGEND is/was well extensive when it came to him trying to explain how may time he has tried to come up with a cure and it not being successful.
 Assess the impact of sound in establishing the theme.
“Its original premise involved a “last man alive” scenario in contemporary Los Angeles, with one average man immune to a virus that has eliminated most of humanity and turned the remainder into vampires that seek to kill him during nighttime hours. His efforts to scrounge for food and supplies during the day eventually lead him on a search for a cure for the virus, one that he famously finds but is made somewhat irrelevant by his discovery that it is he who is the ultimate monster in need of execution.” (Filmtracks) One of the most intensifying things is when the wind was blowing which paints a picture in mind which is the loneliness and lack of living in the city of New York.
 How does the use of sound inform the mood of the scene, or the film overall?
The quiet town having only the sounds of what is left of nature in it, really made each scene. It shows that there is not another person near Neville. In fact, he thinks that he is the last man alive until Anna and Ethan save him after he has a mental breakdown.
 Can you identify specific sounds in your film that allow you to infer a particular genre?
The music used is when Neville discovers that the young woman that rescues him has never heard of Bob Marley. This was brought about when Anna saw a picture of Neville’s daughter, Marley. This is when Neville started to explain the meaning and reason why his daughter was named that, which was that his wife named her after Bob Marley but he then came to realize that Anna had never heard of Bob Marley. Neville then goes on to well explains how “Bob Marley literally though he could cure racism and hate with love and his music. Marley was shot before a peace rally, and he still went on stage to sing two days later. Neville says that people were asking Marley why he did that.” Neville says that Marley responds: “The people who are trying to make this world worse are not taking a day off. How can I? Light up the darkness.” This quote well establishes the right and exact theme of the movie. All Neville sees is darkness, and loneliness.
• Assess how the scene or sequence would play differently if you changed or removed a key category of sound.
I honestly believe if the sound effects were to be removed from this movie, it would have made the movie boring and hard to follow. As we all have come to recognize and respect the importance of music in a movie in this movie “the quiet town having only the sounds of what is left of nature in it, really made each scene.”

Week 1 Blog: Ted 2

Title: Ted 2
Writer: Seth MacFarlane, Alec Sulkin, and Wellesley Wild
Director: Seth MacFarlane
Year: 2015
Actors: Mark Wahlberg as John Bennett, Seth MacFarlane as Ted (Voice and motion capture), Tara Strong as Ted’s “I Love You” function, Amanda Seyfried as Samantha Leslie Jackson, Jessica Barth as Tami-Lynn, Giovanni Ribisi as Donny, Morgan Freeman as Patrick Meighan, John Slattery as Shep Wild, Patrick Warburton as Guy, Michael Dorn as Rick, Bill Smitrovich as Frank, Cocoa Brown as Joy, John Carroll Lynch as Tom Jessup, Ron Canada as the Judge, Richard Schiff as Steve.
Story: “Life has changed drastically for thunder buddies John (Mark Wahlberg), now a bachelor, and best pal Ted (Seth MacFarlane), now married to the woman (Jessica Barth) of his dreams. Problems arise when the couple decide to adopt a child, but the law declares Ted to be property and not a person. Angry and dejected, the lovably foulmouthed teddy bear must now seek legal help from a young lawyer (Amanda Seyfried) and a legendary, civil-rights attorney (Morgan Freeman) to get the justice he deserves.”(Wikipedia)
Plot: “John Bennett has been divorced from Lori Collins for six months. Meanwhile, Ted marries his girlfriend, Tami-Lynn, but they fight constantly. Ted and Tami-Lynn decide to have a child to attempt to preserve their relationship. Since Ted is incapable of reproductive functions, he goes to John for help. At the same time, Ted is trying to encourage John to start dating again, but John is reluctant. Ted discovers that John has gotten increasingly addicted to Internet pornography. Ted encourages John to date the first woman he meets.
Ted and John attempt to get a sperm donor, and ultimately, Ted accepts John’s donation offer. Unfortunately, Tami-Lynn is infertile, having ruined her ovaries through excessive drug use. Tami-Lynn and Ted’s inquiries into adoption draw attention to his status as property, resulting in the loss of his job and financial accounts. Furthermore, Ted’s marriage to Tami-Lynn is annulled. John suggests that they take the situation to court. Since they cannot afford a lawyer, their case is assigned to a novice lawyer, Samantha Leslie Jackson. At first they are reluctant to work with her, feeling she is too inexperienced but they quickly change their minds when they discover that she shares their love of marijuana. The three bond as they prepare to present the case.
Meanwhile, Donny is now employed as a janitor at the Hasbro Toy Company headquarters. He convinces the company CEO to hire an expert attorney to ensure that Ted maintains his status as property. Donny proposes that Hasbro capture Ted and study him in hopes of discovering the secret to creating more living teddy bears.
The court rules against Ted. Disheartened but desperate, Samantha, Ted and John turn to Patrick Meighan, a highly respected civil rights attorney, in the hopes of overturning the court’s decision. They take a road trip to New York City to meet with him, but their car goes off road due to Ted’s reckless driving, and the group spends the night in a hidden marijuana patch. While sitting around a campfire, Samantha and John realize their attraction for each other. The next morning, the group proceeds to New York City. Meighan is sympathetic to Ted’s plight, but ultimately refuses the case, as he believes that Ted has not significantly contributed to humanity due to his juvenile and slacker lifestyle.
Ted, angry over the injustice and jealous of Samantha and John’s new relationship, runs off to be left alone. Donny follows him as he wanders into the New York Comic-Con. Once inside, Donny poses as a costumed fan and asks Ted for a picture, but Ted flees as soon as Donny reveals himself. He steals a phone and contacts John before Donny catches him. John and Samantha arrive at Comic-Con and search for Ted, arriving as Donny is about to cut Ted open. They save Ted and begin to leave the convention. Unbeknown to the trio, Donny cuts the cables holding up a model of the Starship Enterprise. John pushes Ted out of the way, and is hit by the model himself sending him into a coma. Donny is arrested.
At the hospital, Samantha, Ted and Tami-Lynn rejoice when John is revealed to be fine. Patrick Meighan enters and tells them he has been inspired to reconsider taking the case because John was willing to risk his own life to save Ted. Meighan gets the ruling overturned because Ted is self-aware, feels complex emotions, and is capable of empathy. A reporter asks if Ted has any words to say as a person for the first time, so Ted re-proposes to Tami-Lynn. After they are re-married, Ted adopts the surname of “Clubber Lang,” and he and Tami-Lynn adopt a baby boy whom they name Apollo Creed Clubber Lang. John and Samantha happily pursue their own relationship.” (Wikipedia)
Chronology: I feel like the movie was told in a chronological order. Which helps put everything in place and helps it make sense and understandable. In the movie Ted 2 the movie does not abandon the conventions of normal chronology. In the movie Ted was trying to prove that he wasn’t just a property but a bear with feeling and a soul. The chronological story in the movie helped not only to tell the story but also build character.
